As Vice President of Accounting Paul O’Brien helps lead client’s financial operations, providing strategic expertise on grant management, fiscal reporting, and improving auditing processes. With a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Accounting from Dominican University and a Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA) in Finance from Loyola University, Paul is a results-driven and principled senior financial professional with experience in both the financial and nonprofit sectors.
Prior to joining EAB Solutions, Paul directed daily fiscal operations as the Controller of Skills for Chicagoland’s Future, a nonprofit organization with the mission to close the workforce skills gap and assist unemployed job-seekers in re-entering the workforce. Throughout his time with the organization, Paul led external and governmental audits, assisted in banking relationships and obtained lines of credit, developed internal control procedures from conception to implementation, and implemented and created tracking for improved grant application processes. His innovative approach to traditional programs led to improved employee morale, reduced turnover and the creation of time and money-saving initiatives, including an accounting internship program to assist daily operations and save the company an estimated $300,000.
While working for Crowe Horwath, as a Consultant, Paul oversaw financial operations for two nonprofit agencies – Youth Guidance ($8,000,000) and Chicago Commons ($20,000,000) – and led a staff of on-shore and off-shore teams as he developed annual budgets for both organizations, and prepared and finalized audits.
From 2006 to 2010, Paul oversaw financial activities as the Vice President of Finance/Chief Financial Officer for Our Children’s Homestead, an $8,000,000 child welfare and international adoption agency.
With a demonstrated history of working in nonprofit spaces, an innate ability to focus on daily and large-scale operations of an organization and experience in internal and external audit management, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), payroll system migration, program creation, process and solutions development, Paul leads with a drive to deliver value, solutions, results and impactful change.
During his free time, Paul serves as a mentor for Loyola University’s Q Mentorship Program and serves on the finance committee of a local non-profit.
